The early photos I had of this project were lost due to all of my phone information being wiped. I do have some slightly later progress photos shown here though.

I have photos of when I finally finished the clay based which took the longest, and a photo of the damage that had happened when it fell over in my car.

In the photo with the black dots on the eyes, I had marked out where I wanted the eyes to be looking. In the photo before that, I added eyes with paint and clear hot glue over that. I finally sealed it with clear, shiny coat of a kind of gloss and let that dry. It turned out just how I wanted it to.

There are 4 final pictures, with close ups of the eyes in lighting that I thought was more interesting than my dorm.

Artist Statement

 

This sculpture is what I see as divine, and unsightly, and is a reflection of an angel. Many angels in the bible are described as horrifying with many eyes, so I got inspiration from that. I think that art that is gross or unsettling can be closer to awe than some pieces of art focused on beauty. Horror and awe go hand in hand. I did not originally plan on using hot glue for the eyes, but it gave it a lot more dimension and I'm glad I did. I used acrylic paint for the eyes, and very lightly brushed tinted water with red and blue paint mixed in to give it a veiny appearance. I wanted the lines between the eyes to bend and flow like slime. I really wanted to focus on organic form for this project, thinking about where slime would naturally drip, or how shiny it should be, and the iris and the pupils being raised to reflect nature. I really like how this project turned out, and it's opened my eyes to how much I enjoy sculpture.
