Creative Voice Part 1: Where Ideas Come From Instructions

Creative Voice Part 2: Brainstorming Workshop

Steal like an Artist

1. In your own words, explain what Kleon means when he says artists “steal”.

Kleon is referring to seeing traits, styes, subject matter and more in others art and taking inspiration from it, adding it to your own art.

2. How do you feel about copying another artist’s work? Have you done it before? If so,
describe the experience - what did you learn?

Copying another artists work is fine to learn things, but posting it online or calling it your own is morally wrong. Its good to copy paintings from old masters or even just art you like, that way you can experiment with styles and subject matter. Ive done it before to learn, but I never tried it pass it as my own original work.

3. There are 7 short essays in the reading (How to look at the world like an artist, Nothing is
Original, Garbage in/Garbage Out, Climb your own family tree, Make things know
thyself, Start Copying, and imitation is not flattery) along with several quotes and
drawings. First, tell me what content resonates the most with you at this moment. You
can choose to list a few sentences from an essay, specify the title of an entire essay, or
post a picture of one of the quotes or drawings. Then, describe in-depth why it feels
relevant to you.

"Nothing is original"

The idea that nothing is original and everything is stolen is really interesting to me. I think it's really freeing to hear that, so you feel better about taking little things from other peoples art and making it your own. I think its a crucial step in advancing your own artwork, and is important for every artists to steal like an artist.
